User Reviews about WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010
If you have played 2008 or 2009, you will be happy or not happy that the stylus is pretty much not needed for this version, the whole 360 circles thing is now gone, and lets you have a bit more freedom for your wrestler. However, some of those old annoying modes are still present in the 2010 version. First thing I did was checked out the options, then strait to create a wrestler. The CAW options is expanding, but still seems very generic. However there may be plenty of things I have not unlocked... but I really can not be bothered with it.
So you can either do an exhibition with whoever you want, or start a career mode that you can only choose your CAW to be part of. You can not choose to play as any of the WWE wrestlers which seems wrong to me. I think it is due to the story mode that is the exact same thing all the time. You start off watching Triple-H take out someone, and then he meets you backstage, you talk to him and if you chose to not step aside, he will beat you up, if you choose the options to step aside or help wrestlers out, suck up to general managers or Vince himself, you may get bonus cards and money etc. These cards seem to be not worth the while... you receive cards you can use during a match for something like auto kick outs, auto get out of a submission, interference etc.. but you will grow tired of these quickly and realize you do not need them to win the match.
That annoying never ending training thing is back too. I set my CAW up to have equal stats for everything. And I have not even bothered to fill up another gauge, I just skip the free days and go to the event nights and it's working out fine, you really do not need to bother with it. The only reason you might want to get the gauges up is you need a specific amount to be able to chose to do certain moves.... like if you wanna do the Stunner, you will have to have your speed up to about 8. Others might require you to have 2 gauges up to 8 and so on and so on, but I am not going to bother with it, as most of the matches I do, all you have to do is just keep punching or kicking your opponent, and then do your finisher and go for the pin. It's just too easy and there is no strategy needed.
Matches are just not fun. The characters are very stiff, and response isn't that great, if you get knocked down or miss a punch, you end up facing the wrong direction, and your opponent might have a chance to attack you, but like i said, you work things out, and just continuously keep punching them till your ready to finish them. Game play is just long and tedious. It really has not been improved from previous versions.
So you will start off in the ECW, and eventually if your good enough (which is too easy to do) Stephanie will drag you over to RAW and I haven't even bothered to keep going after that yet. There is a lot more matches this time around, but don't get too excited to read that ambulance matches, ladder matches and things have now been included. As they are not really any fun to play what-so-ever. With the ambulance match, all you do is whip your opponent to the back of the ambulance, press something to open the doors, then tap y and b till he meter is full and it drives away. There is no challenge to it. The ladder match was even worse, once you set the ladder up in the ring, you get to the top of it and pretty much just tap the buttons on a 360 motion, then go anticlockwise, till you've made the meter for that full.... take my word, it's pretty boring.
It really amazes me that after 2 non-successful WWE games for the DS, that they are still using the same old things that no one liked. You get a week off in between each show, and the training just takes too long, I just skip them and don't bother with them. But if someone did want to get all there meters full, you would be there for hours playing the mini games of exorcise to do it. It's just boring.... imagine playing something like New Super Mario Brothers, and you complete the first level, but to get to stage 1-2 you have to go to the casino and play card games for hours till you've earned enough points for a mushroom to grow bigger.... tho it's not quite like that in this game, as all you need to do is just chose to go to sleep till the next day and so on till match night, i think you get the point. The way to raise your skills and power ect needs to be cut down into something else, not just endless boring gym training. They should make it if you win certain matches or defeat a certain person, you get more attribute points.
then the whole career mode thing is also boring me to tears. I'm constantly just skipping through endless text/talk to get it over and done with. Most of the time I feel like this game is trying to be more like SIMS then a wrestling game. You just wanna get in the ring, shut up and wrestle. But it just goes on and on and on and never stops.
I can't even see this being fun as a two player game, as there is no skill or strategy needed to win. THQ may make great games on home consoles, but on DS they really need to re-think what they are doing. I would much prefer they remade a version of WWF Royal Rumble or RAW that they had on the super Nintendo or Sega systems years ago... those games where only 16 bit, but everyone loved them, and they could add so much more to simple games like that with the DS technology. But instead they are developing these boring games that are like following a reality tv star around who does all these things during a day, and occasionally might wrestle if he gets the time.
Honestly, I prefer this version over the other 2, but that does mean I like it very much. It's really slow, boring, dull, controls need improving, story mode needs to be shortened, more options to just skip to the next event instead of day are needed... if you live & breath WWE you may love this game just seeing your favorites on the DS screens... but to someone who wants a good wrestling game on DS... it's sad to say, after 3 attempts, there still isn't one! -- Not quite there yet.
I just recently bought this game last week for my DS. At first it was really tough and i didnt know what to do...until i started playing it more. Now? I cant stop playing it! This is my first Raw game so im REALLY liking it so far...The only problem is that you cant save your stuff while your in Story mode but other then that, EXCELLENT game for anybody who loves WWE like I Do -- Smackdown vs. Raw BY FAR THE COOLEST GAME I BOUGHT!
For a DS game, SvR 2010 is pretty decent. If this was a console game, fans would probably hate it. I've played some of the recent SvR games on the PSP, which play identically to the console games. The only real difference is the graphics and lack of a 2nd analog stick and 2 shoulder buttons. I'll admit that I was quite disappointed when I started messing around with SvR 2010's controls. The game initially felt very clunky and repetitive. It's starting to grow on me, though, since I've mastered the controls and played many different match types. In some ways, the console versions could learn a lot from the DS game, but the DS version still could use more variety and interactivity during the actual matches.
Good:
- Many moves and animations are ripped straight from the older Smackdown games, so they look decent.
- The roster is huge and includes basically every major star from all 3 brands, minus a few lower mid-carders and divas. There are even a few surprises like Kennedy and Umaga.
- The graphics are great, especially the character models and most have fairly recent attires, with Matt Hardy being a notable exception (he has his pre-Wrestlemania attire, and no facepaint for Jeff).
- Speciality matches/backstage matches are really well done. The mini games for climbing the ladders, cages, grabbing belts, closing the ambulance doors, etc are innovative and sometimes better than the console mini-games. These matches (in addition to the card system) are what really make this game unique.
- Card system is simple, but a good addtion. If you use the abilities at the right time, you can really turn a match around.
- Full entrances with accurate theme music are included. The entrance animations are also ripped from the console SvR games, so they look great.
- The controls are easy to learn and remind me in many ways of the Gamecube WWE games (not nearly as fluid, though).
- Story mode seems good so far, you can tell they put a decent amount of work into this mode. I haven't played much of it, but I like what I see. I also haven't messed with the CAW much but I can tell it's a very basic version of the old SvR games. Again, it seems adequate for a DS game.
The Bad:
- The moves might look good, but the basic grappling engine needs a lot of work. There are only 3 weak front/back grapples and 3 strong front/back grapples. There's 1 ground grapple at the feet facing up and 1 facing down. Same with the head. You can irish whip, but there are NO irish whip grapples and only 1 irish whip strike. No springboard moves, apron moves, NO moves off the turnbuckle to the outside, only 1 turnbuckle grapple, 1 signature, and (from what I can tell) only 1 fininsher.
- The reversal system is practically non-existent. You can reverse from the initial strong and weak grapple positions, but you can't reverse finishers or really anything else during the move itself.
- There is no selling. You opponent will just get up immediately if they're fresh, or lay there still for a while if they're hurt. There are a LOT of collision detection issues, and some moves don't feel like they connect at all.
If any of you ever played the WWF War Zone/Attitude games, everything feels just as clunky here at times, but the animations are much better of course, and the game is much more simple to play. You know how TNA Impact felt like it needed about triple the amount of moves/animations to make it a good wrestling game? Same concept here. They did so many things right this year, but the in-ring gameplay is lacking. If they can add more grapple positions, more moves, more animations, and more reversals, then we'll see a truly great WWE game on the DS.
-- It's getting there, but still needs more...
This Game is far better then 2009 and 2008 they finally got rid of the stupid stylus now you can play wrestling the right way by using the bottons.
and the new features are really cool in this game like the all new card system which allows you to cheat when your hurt.
Also create a superstar has alot more to offer and there is way more moves to choose from this year for created wrestlers.
Aslso another great feature is the storyline its kinda like last years but it was a great season I played the whole thing in 1 day.
Also you can unlock arenas, power ups, and much more.
The Backstage brawl has 14 unlockable areas where you can use weapons throw oppenets into stuff like tvs, furniture exct.
All and all its better then last year if I could rate it from 1 to 10 stars I would rate it about 8 stars because the entrances are too messed up.
Like for example undertaker when he comes out he usually comes out with a hat and coat he comes out with neither just like the other games and edge doesnt come out with his jacket he usually wears so the wrestling series does need some work on the ds.
but its still a great/fun video game -- GREAT WWE GAME FOR DS
