User Reviews about Cake Mania

I loved playing Cake Mania on the computer so I figured that buying it for the DS would be a pretty safe bet. Oh boy, I had no idea what I was getting myself into...

The game idea is the same as the internet version. Our plucky heroine has returned from college & discovered that the family bakery has been closed by a huge corporation. (Sales were terrible.) As a result Jill has sworn to do whatever it takes to regain the family store- even if it means selling cakes from her home!

I was kind of torn by this game. On one hand the game play is very similar to the computer version. Just like on the computer, you have to put cakes together in specific ways & get it to the customers before they storm out. The happier they are when they get the cake, the higher the tip you get. This is a good thing as it's the original game that drew me in. I didn't want to get my DS version & have it be completely different.

Where the bad comes in is in the screen size. The game version is just too tiny. What took up a good size portion of a computer screen has been compacted into a teeny little screen. The visibility is bad enough for the regular cakes but when it comes to the more complex cakes with two tiers & a topping, the visibility is EXTREMELY poor. As in "I had to quit after a while because my eyes began to hurt" poor- the images were just that small. This might not bother some players, but for those of us who don't have the best eyesight it will just be a huge irritation that will put a damper on the game play. There's also some glitches in the game, but nothing that has completely put me off of playing & re-playing.

My recommendation is to get this used or to just stick to the PC versions. The game still captures the fun of the original PC version, but the small screen is such a turn off that I don't think I'll be getting any of the other versions that are out for the DS. It's just too much eye strain for me. -- A decent game is ruined by the small screen.
I was hesitant about starting the Cake Mania series because I didn't think anything could top Diner Dash. I was frustrated at first with Cake Mania because I couldn't get Jill to walk around the bakery fast enough (I literally had it ready to trade-in). Once I finally figured out how to upgrade Jill I was hooked! I've played all 3 Cake Mania's on DS and while Cake Mania 3 is my favorite, I highly recommend all of them! -- I thought nothing could top Diner Dash but Cake Mania is my new favorite!
I originally played this game as a download on my cell phone and was hopelessly addicted to it. So when I got my Nintendo DS....I thought I'd get the DS version and try it out. It is definitely a keeper. I have now tried Cake Mania 2 and 3 as well....and this one is still a winner. The cake/frosting/icing buttons are nice and big. It is easy to distinguish the shapes on the layer cakes. And my personal FAVORITE thing about this game......it saves your final score!!!! I really wish the other 2 games did that. I like the challenge of trying to beat my previous scores. At 1st, I wasn't too crazy about the fact that the screen has to scroll over to get to the place for the toppers...but I got used to it and now it doesn't bug me so much. It is definitely a time management game worth having. If it actually SAVED your progress on each level so you could quit and turn off your DS and then get back to it the following day....I would have given the game 5 stars. As it is....to get a really high score, you have to play the game all the way through. -- Nintendo DS Cake Mania review
This is my first experience with Cake Mania. I've been playing this game now for about a week and I'm finding it so much fun!. I'm finding as the levels go on its becoming more challenging, which I really enjoy rather than finding them all easy. I like the option to keep buying upgrades with the money I earn, that way it makes each shift have a reason and not just a matter of collecting money.

The only things I don't really like with this game is that due to it being on a small screen its hard to see some of the decorations. Also the other thing I don't really like is how you have to press an arrow in order to get full access to the whole kitchen, when I'm in the middle of a busy shift it can be a little bit of a hassle ;)

Overall its definitely worth playing! :D -- Really enjoying this game
I purchased this game after getting cake mania 2 for my DS. I enjoyed all the cake mania games online on my pc so was happy to get them for my DS. I think it's worth the money if you enjoy time management games. -- cake mania
